Luis Rubiales Resigns Over World Cup Kiss Scandal

Luis Rubiales stepped down from his role as the president of the Spanish soccer federation on Sunday. His resignation comes after facing intense criticism for an unwanted kiss with Women's World Cup winner Jennifer Hermoso in recent weeks.

“Today, I notified the interim president at 9:30 pm, Mr. Pedro Rocha, that I have resigned as President of RFEF,” Rubiales said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. “I have also let him know that I have also resigned my position in UEFA so that my Vice-presidency position can be filled.”

“To insist on waiting around,” he continued, “and holding onto that won’t contribute anything positive, neither to the Federation nor to Spanish football. Among other things, because the powers that be will prevent my return.”

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has officially confirmed that Luis Rubiales has submitted his resignation from his roles as the head of the Spanish football association and as vice president of UEFA.

“The Royal Spanish Football Federation confirms that Luis M. Rubiales Béjar has presented his resignation tonight,” RFEF said in a statement. “This has been made known to the federative entity through a letter to Pedro Rocha Junco. In addition, he also resigns from his position as vice president of UEFA.”

The federation's board of directors will proceed to organize an election to select a successor to Luis Rubiales. Rubiales has expressed his determination to clear his name, characterizing the situation as "excessive persecution."

“I have faith in the truth and I will do everything when it’s in my hands so that it prevails,” he wrote. “My daughters, my family and the people that love me have suffered the effects of an excessive persecution, as well as many falsehoods, but it’s also true that in the street, every day more, the truth is being imposed.”

Luis Rubiales' unwelcome kiss of Jennifer Hermoso after Spain's triumph in the Women's World Cup final on August 20 drew widespread criticism both within Spain and internationally. The 46-year-old had previously apologized and characterized the kiss as "mutual," a description that Hermoso disputed. She asserted that she did not provide consent and felt disrespected by the incident.

Following the incident, FIFA provisionally suspended Luis Rubiales for a period of 90 days, pending the outcome of a disciplinary investigation. Pedro Rocha has taken over the role in the interim while the investigation is ongoing.

Shortly after Luis Rubiales' resignation, Jennifer Hermoso made an appearance in Mexico where she plays for CF Pachuca Femenil. The team honored the star in her first match since their World Cup victory. Hermoso received a warm welcome from the crowd, who gave her a resounding ovation before the game. A large mural of her was displayed in the stadium. During the event, she put her World Cup medal around her neck and waved to the cheering crowd.

“I think what (Rubiales) did was wrong and all the attention that they should have as champions went directly to him, and I think it’s right that he was removed from his position,” one fan at the match, Jennifer, told CNN en Español.
