Lucknow Super Giants To Wear Mohun Bagan Colours

In a thrilling move that is set to captivate cricket and football fans alike, the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), owned by the RP Sanjiv Goenka Group, will be sporting the iconic green and maroon-colored jersey of the legendary football club Mohun Bagan in their upcoming IPL match against the Kolkata Knight Riders on Saturday. This unique tribute highlights the deep emotional connection between the city of Kolkata and the revered institution that is Mohun Bagan.

The RP Sanjiv Goenka Group, which acquired the Lucknow franchise after the IPL expanded to 10 teams in 2022, is also the principal owner of the Indian Super League team Mohun Bagan, having acquired a majority stake before the ISL 2020-21 season. Shashwat Goenka, the owner of the LSG team, expressed his sentiments, saying, "It is not an institution, it's actually an emotion. Its legacy represents the city of Kolkata."

With this decision, LSG aims to pay homage to the glorious history of Mohun Bagan and the city it represents. The team hopes to feel at home at the hallowed grounds of Eden Gardens as they face a crucial match against the Kolkata Knight Riders, with both teams vying for a spot in the playoffs.

"We hope that not only Mohun Bagan fans but also all the residents of Kolkata will support us. Kolkata is our home, and we seek as much support as we can get," added Goenka, appealing to the passionate cricket fans of the city.

The announcement took place at the RPSG House, with LSG's stand-in captain Krunal Pandya and wicketkeeper-batter Nicholas Pooran in attendance. Krunal, who assumed captaincy mid-season due to KL Rahul's injury, expressed his excitement, saying, "I am aware of Mohun Bagan's achievements and would love to witness their games. I look forward to the day when I can experience the passion firsthand."

Krunal also expressed hope for the overwhelming support from the fans, stating, "I request all the Mohun Bagan fans to come on Saturday and support us. I hope we perform well against the Kolkata Knight Riders." The team aims to draw strength from the immense support they anticipate receiving from both Mohun Bagan and cricket enthusiasts in Kolkata.

This announcement follows the RPSG Group's decision to drop the prefix "ATK" from Mohun Bagan's name, responding to the sentiments of fans. Starting from June 1, the century-old football club will be known as "Mohun Bagan Super Giant." This move further solidifies the connection between the conglomerate's sporting ventures.

As the Lucknow Super Giants take to the field in the revered green and maroon jersey, spectators and viewers alike will witness a fusion of two sporting legacies. The stage is set for an enthralling clash between LSG and the Kolkata Knight Riders, where the players hope to create a lasting impression and secure a spot in the IPL playoffs. The sight of the iconic colors on the cricket field will undoubtedly evoke a sense of nostalgia and pride, celebrating the rich sporting heritage of both Mohun Bagan and the city of Kolkata.
