Last Chance for Belgium’s Golden Generation

Belgium go to the World Cup as the highest ranked European team and with the announcement of Kevin De Bruyne’s likely retirement after the tournament, this would be the last chance for the Golden Generation to grab some silverware.

They have often failed to deliver on the big stage with quarter-final defeats in the European Championships in 2016 and 2020 and a semi-final defeat in the last World Cup. Belgium’s captain, Hazard stated, “Of course, we've got an incredible generation of players, but we still haven't won anything. If we really want to earn that golden generation nickname, I think that's the one thing we still need to do."

De Bruyne is not the only player who may call it quits after this World Cup with Axel Witsel, Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen & Eden Hazard also likely will not feature in the next World Cup. Belgium open their campaign against Canada on November 23.
