2023 Independence Day: Guests & Selfies Sparkle in Delhi

On August 15, 2023, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will lead the Nation in celebrating the 77th Independence Day from the iconic Red Fort in Delhi. Around 1,800 individuals from diverse vocations and regions have been invited to participate as Special Guests in these celebrations at Red Fort. The invited group includes 75 couples representing each State/Union Territory, adorned in traditional attire.

This event aligns with the Government's vision of 'Jan Bhagidari'. It marks the culmination of the 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav' celebrations, initiated by the Prime Minister on March 12, 2021, from Sabarmati Ashram. The purpose is to invigorate the country's journey towards becoming a developed nation by 2047.

Notably, the special invitees comprise affluent members of society, including more than 400 Sarpanches from over 660 vibrant villages, 250 participants from the Farmer Producer Organisations scheme, and 50 beneficiaries each from the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Scheme and Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana.

The list encompasses 50 Shram Yogis from the Central Vista Project, Khadi workers, border road construction contributors, Amrit Sarovar, Har Ghar Jal Yojana builders, primary school teachers, nurses, and fishermen. Their stay also includes visits to the National War Memorial and meetings with Raksha Rajya Mantri Ajay Bhatt.

This year's Independence Day celebration introduces novel initiatives to enhance public participation. Twelve distinct locations, including iconic landmarks like India Gate and Raj Ghat, feature selfie points dedicated to showcasing various government schemes and initiatives. This interactive approach aims to familiarize the public with programs such as Ujjwala Yojana, Skill India, Swachh Bharat, and Digital India.

The enthusiasm is thriving in Jammu & Kashmir. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has kickstarted the "Tiranga Rally" and paid tribute to fallen soldiers through the "Meri Mati Mera Desh" initiative. As a symbolic gesture, commemorative plaques will be set up in every village across the region, honouring the soldiers' sacrifices.

The festivities will peak with the hoisting of the tricolour at Bakshi Stadium, symbolizing national unity, bravery, and an unwavering spirit. This occasion will feature cultural presentations by local artists and students, underlining the commitment to a harmonious and prosperous India. With the participation of contingents from various security forces and cadet groups in full-dress rehearsals, a magnificent and unforgettable display is ensured on this auspicious day.

Selfie points

An online selfie contest will be hosted on the MyGov portal from August 15-20 as part of the festivities. Individuals are encouraged to share selfies taken at the designated installations for a chance to win a prize of ₹10,000 each. This contest adds an engaging element to the celebration, promoting citizen involvement.

Restrictions and Security measures

In Kashmir, a significant change has emerged in terms of security measures. This year, no internet restrictions or bans will be in place for Independence Day. A three-tier security system, coupled with drone surveillance, will ensure the smooth conduct of festivities and prevent untoward incidents. The administration focuses on encouraging maximum public participation in parades and celebrations.
